Classic Formula 3 Historic Motorsport Team
The Team
Woodside Motorsport started historic racing in 1988 with a Morris Minor in Classic Saloon Car Racing. In 1999 we made the change to Classic Formula 3 and campaigned a 1971 March 713M with a Lotus Twin-cam engine, winning the 1600cc class in 2001. For 2002 we switched to a Toyota Novamotor powered March 803B chassis, again for the HSCC (Historic Sports Car Club) Classic F3 series, but this time in class A for the 2 litre cars.
We are based in Colgate and Horsham, both in north West Sussex.
The Car – March 803B – 2
This car was built in 1980 by March Engineering for use in that year’s British F3 championship.
The chassis is an aluminium monocoque, powered by a 2 litre Toyota engine, tuned by Italian firm Novamotor. The engine was developed
from that used in the Toyota Celica 1.6GT in Japan. The car has wishbone suspension with in-board springs and dampers both front and rear. Brakes are out-board Girling / AP Racing items and the gearbox is a Hewland Mk.9, 5-speed. Originally the car had a full ground effect package as used on F1 cars of the period, however the sliding skirts that were used to seal the air beneath the car are banned now for safety reasons, but the car’s sidepods do still contain the wing sections used to create the high levels of downforce this car originally had. These days the car is capable of approximately 145mph, and can lap circuits such as the Brands Hatch GP track, at an average of around 100mph.
